CHAPTER SIX

“I don’t understand why you didn’t just talk to me about it,” my wife said, sitting across from me and the family therapist.

I sighed. I was tired of talking about it. We had been talking in circles for at least four sessions and hadn’t made any progress. I felt rotten about the whole thing as it was but to have to keep reiterating it over and over again, saying I was sorry, showering her with gifts. It all seemed to be in vain. Thank God my son was all better. He’d gotten over his fever and though he didn’t know the particulars and we tried to put up a good front with him, he must have sensed the tension in the air.

“Babe, please—” I said.

“Don’t call me that,” she said, closing her eyes tightly.

I was getting angry. I’d had enough of being treated like I was some dirty old man. “Why do you keep pretending you didn’t know?” I asked her. “You knew.”

“Why do you say that?” the therapist asked me.

“We never talked about it but she had to have known,” I told him.

“Is that true?” he asked my wife.

She stared at the floor. “At first, I thought maybe it would just go away. Maybe it was just a phase. I could look the other way. Our relationship was important and what would our son think? What would our families think, what would our neighbors think? But then… it just kept going. He kept having these spontaneous last minute meetings, when I knew he didn’t have meetings because my mother, who works in the office, would tell me. And I… I guess I just hoped it would go away.”

I sighed. “Are you going to tell him?” I asked her.

“Tell him what?” she asked me with feigned innocence.

“Please, don’t pass yourself off as a nun. Do you think I don’t know about you and your boss?”

She turned beet red. “How did you…? Well, it’s not like you were giving me any at home!”

I sighed. This was ridiculous. I just wanted to leave the therapist’s office.

“Now, we’re starting to get somewhere,” the therapist said. “Do you love her?”

“What?” I asked him.

“Do you love your wife?” he asked me.

I had to think about that. All the years of pain, of resentment, of pretending. The truth was, my heart wasn’t into her at all. We were a convenience for each other, an arrangement. My heart was with someone, something else and I knew what that was, and who it was, even if I didn’t want to really admit it to myself.

I wondered how Sexy Blue Eyes was doing. I knew he’d made a number of phone calls to me, text messages even at the office, but I’d avoided them and avoided him. I just texted him once to say, “I’ll get back to you. Give me a few days. OK?” But those days had grown into weeks and soon it’d be a month since we’d last seen each other.

I told myself it was for the best.
